Image Entertainment
History[edit]
The company was originally formed in 1981 as Image Entertainment by Martin W. Greenwald, and it was initially specializing in pornographic laserdisc releases. The company soon expanded to mainstream releases within a few years. The company begin specializing in licensed titles from clients including International Video Entertainment, Media Home Entertainment, Celebrity Home Entertainment, VidAmerica, CBS Music Video Enterprises, BMG Video and Orion Home Video, among others.
In late 1990, the company struck a deal with Buena Vista Home Entertainment to distribute its titles on Laserdisc, so Laserdisc Entertainment was founded by ex-Image employees to take the pornographic titles soon after signing the deal with Disney.
At the end of the 1990s, while the Laserdisc format was declining, the company entered DVD and VHS production. In 1999, it took over the distribution of Penthouse titles from WarnerVision Entertainment, and two years later, took over distribution of the Playboy titles from Universal Music & Video Distribution. In 2005, Image signed a distribution deal with Bandai Visual to distribute select anime titles under the Honneamise label. The deal ended in March 2007, when Bandai Visual switched over to Geneon USA. Also that year, the company purchased Public Media, Inc., who owned Home Vision Cinema, and distributor of Janus Films/The Criterion Collection.
By the end of 2000s, Image was in rapid decline. Image stopped distributing mass market distribution of new Penthouse titles in 2006 when Penthouse switched its titles to hardcore image, and two years later, stopped distributing mass market distribution of new Playboy titles due to stock market decline. In 2008, Image expanded to include feature film distribution. In 2010, Image secured a deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to market its catalog titles on DVD and Blu-ray, and the following year, secured a deal with Lakeshore Entertainment to rerelease the New World films on DVD and Blu-ray.
In 2012, the company was sold to RLJ Acquisition, Inc., who planned to merge with Acorn Media to form RLJ Entertainment. The Image brand disappeared in 2015.
