Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment

From Home Video

History[edit]

In 1978, Walt Disney Productions made its start when Disney licensed its titles to MCA Distributing Corporation to distribute and market titles for the DiscoVision format. These discs marked the first appearance of the Walt Disney Home Entertainment branding, to signify the license.

After that, Disney formed Walt Disney Telecommunications and Non-Theatrical Company to market and distribute titles, which was headed by Jim Jimirro.

In early 1980, Disney begin licensing the titles to Fotomat Video for the first 13 titles, in a four-city test, only to be expanded nationwide. The titles went on to be for sale in fall 1980, with the addition of the 14th title, Mary Poppins releasing in early 1981. Disney begin licensing titles to RCA for release on the CED by SelectaVision VideoDiscs, with the WDHE logo.

The success led an expansion in 1983 when Walt Disney Telecommunications and Non-Theatrical Company began licensing out rights to third-party titles, like Bill Burrud's wildlife series, and the distribution rights to Muppet Home Video titles in the U.S. WDTNT also formed Buena Vista Home Video as a label for third-party titles, and Touchstone Home Video as a label for Touchstone films.

In 1987, WDTNT changed its name to Buena Vista Home Video. Disney quickly became the leader for family entertainment based on its peak throughout the 1980s and 1990s, namely a series of tapes based on DuckTales, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, among others. In 1990, titles formerly belonging on the WDHV label, such as SuperTed and Kit Parker Films titles, were shifted to the BVHV label.

Disney continued expanding throughout new labels. In 2019, BVHE hit big when it picked up 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment as a result of The Walt Disney Company acquiring 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets.

In 2024, the company signed a North American distribution deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to distribute its titles.

North American Video Releases[edit]

“Neon Mickey” releases (1980-1986)[edit]

Disney's Winnie the Pooh (1982-2005)[edit]

Walt Disney Cartoon Classics (1983-1992, 1994-1996)[edit]

Walt Disney Classics (1984-1994)[edit]

Disney launched the Black Diamond Classics line in 1984 to release their animated films on home video under this line. Before resigning, then-current Disney CEO, Ron Miller, had plans to release their animated classics on home video. The older Disney executives still believed that releasing their animated films on home video would be a little bit risky, despite having released Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, Fun and Fancy Free, and The Three Caballeros on home video around the early 1980s. The "untouchable" Disney Classics would usually be re-released in theaters around 7-10 years. And the executives thought that if they had the film on videocassette already, they would not go to the movie theater to see it anymore. Plus, it would gamble away from future theatrical revenue.

But by 1984, Walt Disney Home Video was getting increasingly popular, so they decided to release Robin Hood on home video to begin their new Classics line. It was chosen because Robin Hood wasn't one of the more popular Disney animated classics at the time, as evidenced by a 1982 theatrical reissue not doing well at the box office, so it wouldn't be too much of a risk to release it on home video. Robin Hood was released with a suggested retail price of $79.95 on VHS and Betamax and $34.95 on Laserdisc. The tape was also part of Disney's Wrapped and Ready to Give promotion, since it was released a few weeks before Christmas Day. The release of Robin Hood was a small success, eventually becoming one of the best-selling home video titles in 1984.

Disney's Sing-Along Songs (1986-2006)[edit]

Direct-to-video releases (1988-present)[edit]

Walt Disney Mini-Classics (1988-1992)[edit]

Disney launched the Mini-Classics line in May 1988 to release their animated featurettes on home video in the line. Around that time, the company had come up with jumbo packages of releases for the little folks to view during upcoming vacations and summer breaks. With Disney, it was more than price or wrapping--the distinctive and inimitable animation.

Disney's DuckTales (1988-1990s)[edit]

Disney's Cinderella (1988-2006)[edit]

Disney's The Little Mermaid (1990-2007)[edit]

Walt Disney Film Classics (1992-1998)[edit]

Disney's Beauty and the Beast (1992-2003)[edit]

Disney's Aladdin (1993-2005)[edit]

Disney's Favorite Stories (1994-1996)[edit]

Disney launched a similar series of featurettes, called Favorite Stories, over a year after the Mini-Classics series was discontinued. Although each featurette runs about 25-40 minutes, this series only included fairytale featurettes and fairytale short subjects and does not include the Winnie the Pooh featurettes, as those were released under the Winnie the Pooh banner.

Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection (1994-1999)[edit]

Disney's Princess Collection (1995-1996)[edit]

Disney Princess (2000-2006)[edit]

Disney Princess is a media franchise and toy line that was formed in January 2000 by Disney Consumer Products chairman Andy Mooney. It features a lineup of female protagonists who have appeared in various Disney franchises.
