Turner Home Entertainment

From Home Video

New Line releases have their own page. Pre-1987 releases are listed under MGM Home Entertainment, which distributed the first Turner tapes.

History[edit]

The origins of Turner Home Entertainment came into existence. One in 1984, when RKO formed its own home video label, RKO Home Video, to release the RKO Pictures library after years of licensing to other distributors, such as The Nostalgia Merchant and VidAmerica. The other, was in 1986, when Ted Turner launched a separate label, Turner Home Entertainment to issue Turner events, and it was distributed by MGM/UA Home Video. On the RKO side, in 1985, they closed the Chicago offices, and in 1986, was renamed to RKO Pictures Home Video.

In 1987, Ted Turner acquired the RKO library, including its home video division and its distribution business, and it was consolidated under the Turner Home Entertainment umbrella, after it was separated from MGM/UA. The company's hits were a line of WCW wrestling videos, as well as its colorized RKO titles.

In 1991, the company had bought out Hanna-Barbera and merged its own home video division into THE's umbrella. In 1993, Turner bought out New Line and Castle Rock, and its video titles began to be distributed by Turner. In 1994, the company secured a deal with PBS to release its titles after a deal with Pacific Arts Video expired. Following that, Turner begin distributing titles by Prism Entertainment and Osmosis Pictures.

In 1996, Turner merged into Time Warner, and as a result, the home video division was absorbed into Warner Home Video.
