MGM Home Entertainment

From Home Video

History[edit]

In 1980, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer partnered with CBS Video Enterprises to form MGM/CBS Home Video, whereas CBS handled marketing and distribution of its titles.

In 1981, MGM/CBS expanded from VHS and Betamax to RCA's CED system. Later that year, in 1981, MGM bought and merged with United Artists, and the following year, MGM and CBS split their ties, with MGM forming MGM/UA Home Entertainment Group, and CBS merging its video division with 20th Century-Fox Video to form The CBS/Fox Company. Also that year, the company began distributing children's titles by Family Home Entertainment, but the deal lapsed in 1985.

In early 1986, MGM/UA Home Video signed a distribution deal with Capitol Records to distribute its home video titles, but the deal quickly expired at the end of the year. Also that year, the company began distributing titles by Turner Home Entertainment, an affiliate company owned by Ted Turner, who briefly owned MGM, the deal would soon lapse by 1988.

In 1990, when Pathé Communications acquired MGM/UA, the company secured a deal with Warner Home Video to market its home video titles. In 1994, MGM/UA launched MGM/UA Family Entertainment for its family releases.

In 1997, MGM/UA, along with Warner, made its way to the DVD market. Also that year, MGM itself acquired Orion Pictures. The company at first, used the snap case format, due to its distribution deal with Warner Home Video, but it was quickly changed to a keep case format at the end of 1997. In 1999, MGM/UA and Warner Home Video split off their ties, with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment to begin distributing titles internationally.

In 2003, MGM launched the MGM Kids sub-label for family releases, and in mid-2003, MGM regained full distribution rights to their regions from Fox.

From 2005 to 2006, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment distributed MGM's releases, and from 2006 to 2020, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment became MGM's distributor. Following Disney's acquisition of Fox, MGM returned to Warner in 2020, which was soon folded into Studio Distribution Services in 2022.
