Sterling Entertainment Group

History

Sterling Entertainment Group was originally formed in 1984 as United American Video, a small local company originally located in Nashville, Tennessee, then, from late 1986, Charlotte, North Carolina. Its headquarters would later relocate to a new location found in Carolina's South in 1996: Fort Mill. It was one of the major budget distributors, alongside GoodTimes Entertainment, Anchor Bay Entertainment, Celebrity Home Entertainment and a host of other sell-through distributors. In the late 1980s, the company operated a short-lived European subsidiary, UAV Europe to market titles for the European market.

Budget sub-labels, such as Hep Cat Entertainment for cartoon releases were established, alongside Gemstone Entertainment. Another sublabel Ovation Home Video emerged in the 1990s. In 1992, UAV secured an agreement with MTM Enterprises for home video rights to its titles; the MTM Home Video label was formed as a result. Also that year, UAV launched a rental imprint called Sterling Entertainment Group and acquired VidAmerica, Inc.. Other small labels, like Video Gems and Celebrity Home Entertainment were soon merged into UAV.

Around 1992, UAV began to focus on children's movies and cartoons as their main product. They created the series 'UAV Gold' for their licensed films, and continued releasing public domain films as just 'UAV Corp.' 'UAV Silver' was occasionally used for newer public domain material or obscure licensed products.

In 1993, the company was renamed to UAV Entertainment in order to expand into entertainment releases. Also that year, UAV created a video gift pack that was designed specifically for all holiday stores under the Video Gift Pak brand line. By 1998, Sterling became UAV's core home video division. In 2003, Sterling secured a deal with DIC Entertainment to distribute its titles. The company went bust in 2006, merging with Ardustry Home Entertainment to become Allumination FilmWorks.
