Lyrick Studios made its origins in 1988 when a company called The Lyons Group was formed as a division of DLM, Inc., an educational company owned by Richard C. Leach. The company's first products was Barney and the Backyard Gang, which was popular enough that it spawned a TV series on PBS in 1992, and the company launched the Barney Home Video label.

In 1994, DLM, Inc. became Lyrick Studios, and The Lyons Group became Lyons Partnership. Also, the company expanded to anything beyond Barney, with the launch of a subsidiary, Big Feats Entertainment, to produce Wishbone. Lyrick had a good relationship with PolyGram Video, they handled worldwide distribution rights to Wishbone on home video, and handled international home video distribution of Barney & Friends.

In 1996, PolyGram surrendered its North American distribution rights of Wishbone back to Lyrick, and then a year afterward, Lyrick picked up mass market distribution rights to The Wiggles and VeggieTales. The company briefly handled distribution of Humongous Entertainment's video games. In late 2000, the company picked up home video rights to HIT Entertainment's shows, and a year later, the company was sold to HIT Entertainment outright and Lyrick's home video business became the North American arm of HIT Entertainment.

Trivia[edit]

  • Like many contemporary family-oriented boutique labels (most notably Feature Films for Families and Disneyland), Lyrick Studios, then known as DLM, duplicated its product at multiple facilities in its formative years. These facilities included Allied Film & Video's Dallas location (explicitly mentioned in the July 2, 1994 edition of Billboard Magazine) and Cassette Productions (confirmed by Reddit user GummyRoach, as well as some 1992 copies of The Backyard Show, Three Wishes, A Day at the Beach, Waiting for Santa, Campfire Sing-Along, Barney Goes to School, Barney in Concert, and Barney's Birthday). Producers Tape Service was set to duplicate Barney tapes in purple shells in the mid-'90s, but the contract fell through and the tapes were ultimately used to duplicate anime fansubbed by Kodocha Anime. Such tapes came to be known, surprisingly (for the franchise's reputation) affectionately, by the nickname "Purple Barney Tapes" within the wider fansubbing community.
