Events

• January:
  • The merger of Time Inc. and Warner Communications has been completed. As a result, HBO Video's sales and distribution departments were folded into those of Warner Home Video.
  • Media Home Entertainment sold its duplication division to West Coast Video Duplicating, Inc. and secured a distribution deal with the Handleman Company for the rackjobbing sell-through market. As part of the deal, Media's pre-existing deal with Video Treasures was broadened to include marketing and distribution of most of Media's releases, both pre- and post-1987, for the budget sell-through market.
  • New World Entertainment sold its film and video libraries to Trans Atlantic Entertainment. Subsequently, R&G Video, which in turn secured a distribution deal with Starmaker Entertainment, became the exclusive home video licensing agent for these libraries.
• February: Strand VCI Entertainment was launched by Strand VCI PLC to market tapes for the US and Canadian market.
• March:
  • The CBS/Fox Company moves to Rank Video Services America from Technicolor Videocassette.
  • In a move to strengthen The Walt Disney Company's position in the children's market, children's music label Walt Disney Records formed a subdivision, called Disney Audio Entertainment, which would oversee the read-along album series.
  • MCA Home Video establishes a new domestic marketing unit, MCA/Universal Home Video. It would adopt the name itself altogether within the next few months.
• May 14: Private Screenings, Media Home Entertainment's erotic label, was renamed completely to Luna Video.
• July:
  • Fox/Lorber partnered with Steve Savage to form New Video Group with Fox Lorber Home Video acting as a label.
  • The Handleman Company consolidated its software departments. During the consolidation, six executives were promoted to different positions:
    • James Hanke, former vice president of Viking Entertainment Corporation, was promoted to vice president of sales at Handleman.
    • Lawrence Hicks, former senior vice president of branch operations, was promoted to senior vice president of merchandising. As the former position, he was replaced by Samuel Milicia, former assistant vice president of the eastern region.
    • Gerald Adams, former senior director, was promoted to vice president of music and book marketing.
    • Sharon Hilliker, former assistant vice president of sales, was promoted to vice president of merchandising programs.
    • Steven Salsberg, former vice president of advertising and marketing, was promoted to vice president and general manager of premium sales and catalog fulfillment programs.
• August:
  • Shape Inc. introduced its eco-friendly Genesis cassette shell, comprised of less parts than the industry-standard V-0 design. A test run of the shell was performed by VTR Productions shortly after for an educational program on how to troubleshoot defective videotapes.
  • The CBS/Fox Company officially started duplicating their product at Rank Video Services America.
• September:
  • PBS partners with Pacific Arts to launch the PBS Home Video label.
  • Barr Films had acquired KVC Home Video.
  • Trylon Video went out of business.
• October 1: RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video and GoodTimes Home Video mutually end their distribution agreement, after which Peter Pan is the last remaining GoodTimes title to be available through RCA/Columbia.
• October:
  • Warner Home Video begins distributing releases from MGM/UA Home Video.
  • CBS Records announces that it will be renamed to Sony Music Entertainment after its corporate parent Sony Corporation loses the license to the CBS branding in January 1991.
• November:
  • New Line Cinema forms its own home video division, New Line Home Video.
  • Viking Entertainment Corporation began trading under the name "Burbank Home Entertainment".
• November 13: MCA Distributing Corporation was renamed to Uni Distribution Corporation.
• December: Media Home Entertainment and The CBS/Fox Company secured a four-year agreement; this agreement only covered releases distributed to the rental market, with Media retaining its own marketing.
• B-movie and special interest home video distributor Active Home Video ceased operations.
