[edit]- March: Magnetic Video Corporation is acquired by its first licensor, 20th Century-Fox.
- May: Fotomat begins signing with Paramount to rent and sell 43 feature films on videocassette.
- June 13: Time-Life Video was established to rent videocassettes.
- June 13: VidAmerica sets up operations as a video rental service, and inks deals with United Artists and Avco Embassy Pictures to rent 20 feature films on videocassette.
- July: RCA enters into an agreement with ITC Entertainment for a variety of programs, including Jesus of Nazareth and To Russia with Elton.
- September: The Laurel Group announces its exclusive claim as the sole licensor for official releases of public domain feature Night of the Living Dead; except for pre-existing licenses from original U.S. theatrical distributor The Walter Reade Organization and co-producer Image Ten, all releases from this point on are to be considered unofficial unless officially licensed by the Laurel Group, regardless of quality.
- October 19: RCA completes a deal with the Rank Organisation for 20 features.
- October 23: RCA announces a deal with Paramount for 75 features.
- November: Columbia Pictures Home Entertainment starts up home video operations, with a deal at Time-Life.
- December: RCA inks deals with Disney for 16 theatrical features and 8 cartoon compilations and with Don Kirshner Productions for 12 music programs.
