Video Gems (distributor)
History[edit]
Video Gems was originally formed in 1979 by Joseph Infante to distribute feature films on videocassette. Its original intent was to distribute martial arts titles and X-rated programs. In 1982, the company began expanding into financing children's programming, due to concerns surrounding the violence in martial arts programs.
In 1986, it secured an agreement with Front Row Video, an affiliate firm owned by VCL Communications that Video Gems would distribute titles over the label.
In 1987, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. An attempt to integrate the library into Celebrity Home Entertainment's catalog was planned, but the deal never happened. In 1990, the company shifted hands into United American Video Corporation, but the company closed down as a whole in 1991.
