HBO Home Entertainment
History
[edit]The company made its start in the UK in 1979 as EMI Videogram, distributing videocassette titles in the United Kingdom. In 1979, Thorn Electrical Industries merged with EMI to form Thorn EMI.
In the U.S., EMI struck deals with Fotomat Video to market titles into the rental market and Time-Life Video for mail-order distribution, while Capitol Records, a music label EMI owned at the time, provided distribution to retailers. In early 1981, EMI licensed the Neil Diamond film The Jazz Singer to Paramount Home Video for North American home video.
In the middle of 1981, the company became Thorn EMI Video, and its first titles were released in North America in late 1981. The company began releasing titles from EMI Music Video and Thames Video worldwide. The company expanded into other territories beyond the UK, US and Canada, such as Australia and France.
By the very beginning of 1985, Thorn EMI Video became Thorn EMI/HBO Video in North America, just over a month after Home Box Office's acquisition of a stake in the label. As a result, the label picked up distribution rights to titles by Tri-Star Pictures and Orion Pictures, both of which HBO had stakes in at the time, and Capitol Records parted ways with the label.
By the very beginning of May 1986, The Cannon Group acquired Thorn EMI's entire entertainment business, including Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment, Thorn EMI Video and Thorn EMI's stake in Thorn EMI/HBO Video. A week earlier, the subsidiaries were acquired in the end of April by Australian businessman Alan Bond's company Bond Corporation. In the wake of the acquisitions, these three companies were renamed to Cannon Screen Entertainment, HBO/Cannon Video and Cannon Video, respectively. Later that year, HBO/Cannon Video began releasing home video titles from Sports Illustrated.
In April 1987, Cannon sold its stake in HBO/Cannon Video to HBO, and the label became HBO Video. A month later, Cannon sold a majority of the library of its Screen Entertainment subsidiary, including then-held distribution rights to some third-party properties, to Weintraub Entertainment Group (excluding some 1984-85 films). For a year, HBO Video appeared to no longer hold the video rights to most of the library, but still reissued a few titles from it while the video rights were cleared up. Meanwhile, the 1984-85 films in question were subsequently re-released on Cannon's new video label. Weintraub and HBO Video secured a new agreement in May 1988, allowing HBO Video to resume distribution of the library full-time (save for Rambo: First Blood Part II, which HBO had reissued during the interim period, but to which Weintraub's rights later reverted to producer Carolco Pictures before the new agreement was ratified), continuing this activity until 1992, just a half-year after Weintraub sold the library to Movie Acquisition Corporation, a subsidiary of French-based Initial Groupe, which itself later merged in April 1993 with Investissements en Droits Audiovisuelles, becoming Lumiere Pictures (which resulted in the folding of MAC). In the meantime, HBO Video also began releasing titles from Playboy Enterprises; this lasted until Q3 1991, when Playboy began to market a majority of its home video titles on its own, with distribution through Uni Distribution Corporation. HBO was involved in a lawsuit with Vestron Video claiming the rights to Hoosiers and Platoon, and it was settled in January 1988, with HBO putting its releases of both movies on the market until H2 1988, when the rights reverted to Vestron.
In 1990, in the wake of the formation of Time Warner from a merger between Time Inc. and Warner Communications, HBO Video's sales and distribution departments were consolidated into those of Warner Home Video, though HBO Video's marketing department remained independent. In the middle of 1991, HBO Video secured the rights to the Samuel Goldwyn Company's catalog, most of which had been available from Nelson Entertainment until the end of 1989, as well as most new releases from the Samuel Goldwyn Company for the next few years. In 1993, HBO Video began distributing titles from Savoy Pictures and, for this purpose, formed an imprint called HBO Savoy Video. By 1994, HBO Video was also known as HBO Home Video. In 1997, it launched the HBO Kids Video imprint for children's releases. HBO soon shifted its focus from independent releases to its own catalog of original programs.
In 2009, HBO Home Video became HBO Home Entertainment. In 2020, it merged completely into Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
