History

[edit]

Golden Book Video was originally formed in 1985 by the Western Publishing Company to release videocassettes based on the company's Golden Books line. Initially consisting of original animation, it was soon expanded with licensing agreements with DIC Enterprises and ABC Video Enterprises in 1986.

In 1986, the label launched a subdivision, Golden Step Ahead, for educational material, and in 1987, it formed another subdivision, GoldenVision, for general entertainment programming.

In 1991, Western Publishing Company bought out Hi-Tops Video from Heron Communications, and merged it into Golden Book Video; the GoldenVision label was also phased out in the meantime.

The Golden Book Video name was retired in 1996, when Western Publishing became Golden Books Family Entertainment and acquired Broadway Video's family entertainment assets.
