Burbank Video

From Home Video

Burbank Video was originally formed in 1983 as a company that distributed licensed films and educational/dance documentaries on video. Around early January 1989, the company was bought out by Viking Entertainment, which owned the public domain video label Troy Gold, formerly known as SRO Video, Opening Night Productions, Curtain Call Video and Viking Video Classics. Viking Entertainment merged the Troy Gold label with Burbank Video, to form the new incarnation of the latter, when the acquisition was accepted/completed.

Around late February 1991, Viking Entertainment bought out four companies/labels: Active Home Video (from independent), Jenal Entertainment (from independent), Chiron Industries (from independent) and American Video (from Powersports Productions). Three were previously owned independently, while one was previously owned by another company. All were eventually absorbed into the Burbank Video label after the acquisitions were accepted/completed.

Around mid April 1991, the McGraw brothers sold a major ownership stake in Viking Entertainment to Michigan-based rack-jobbing company Handleman Corporation. Since then, marketing of the Burbank Video catalog was handled through Video Treasures, which Handleman Corporation controlled at the time.

Fun Facts

  • At one point between 1987-1988, Active Home Video had a video licensing deal with Video Treasures, which was owned independently at the time. This was also when Video Treasures had started video licensing deals with other video labels/companies, most notably Vestron Video, Media Home Entertainment, and Transworld Entertainment.
