- February: Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products senior director Nancy Wolpert is promoted to vice president of home video.
- March 10: The Weinstein Company was formed, taking the Dimension Films line from Miramax.
- April: The UMD Video launched for the PlayStation Portable game console.
- April 8: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment became the main distributor for MGM Home Entertainment after the formation of MGM Holdings.
- May 11: FUNimation Productions was sold to Navarre Corporation for $100.4 million and changes its name to FUNimation Entertainment.
- June: Target, Walmart and several other retailers announced plans to phase out the VHS format entirely by early 2006, in favor of the more popular DVD format.
- June 30: Total Nonstop Action Wrestling secured a distribution deal with Navarre Corporation to distribute its titles on home video.
- July 5: Platinum Disc Corporation and Echo Bridge Entertainment merged to form Echo Bridge Home Entertainment.
- July 20: Lions Gate Home Entertainment and THINKFilm had secured a home video distribution deal.
- August: Deluxe Media Services begins outsourcing its videocassette duplication full-time to Technicolor Home Entertainment Services. The latest known Deluxe cassette is a copy of Sahara (Paramount) dated the 33rd week, the earliest known Technicolor cassette is a copy of Babe (Universal Studios) dated August 18.
- August 2: Image Entertainment acquired Public Media, Inc., which owned Home Vision Cinema, and became the main distributor for The Criterion Collection.
- August 10: PBS Home Video took over home media distribution of Jay Jay the Jet Plane from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
- September 8: New Concorde secured a deal with Buena Vista Home Entertainment to market and distribute titles.
- December 6: The Weinstein Company had secured a distribution deal with Genius Entertainment.
- Best Buy and Circuit City stopped selling VHS tapes online.
