Wellspring Media was originally formed in 1993 by Al Cattabiani, former executive of Pacific Arts Video to distribute films on videocassette.
In 1997, it entered into a distribution deal with Fox Lorber Home Video to handle the marketing of company's titles. Wellspring Media was eventually be absorbed into WinStar Communications, through a new subsidiary WinStar TV & Video. In 2001, WinStar TV & Video was sold to private investors following the bankruptcy of parent WinStar Communications and adopted the Wellspring Media name.
In 2004, it was sold to American Vantage Media Corporation. In 2005, Wellspring Media, along with the rest of American Vantage Media was sold off to Genius Entertainment, eventually absorbing it into the latter.
