VCI Home Video
Video Communications, Inc (also known as VCI Home Video, United Home Video, and currently VCI Entertainment) was one of the oldest home media distribution companies to exist, alongside Magnetic Video and Fotomat. The company was founded in 1976 by longtime movie fan Bill Blair; more of his story can be found here.
History[edit]
In 1976, Bill Blair formed Video Communications, Inc. as a subsidiary of film distributor United Films, whose purpose is to make 16mm films. The first videocassettes were released in 1978, and branded the videocassettes as Command Performance.
In the early 1980s, Media Home Entertainment had distributed these titles. In late 1984, United Entertainment set up another label, Vanguard Video. Both VCI and Vanguard were combined in 1985 to form United Home Video, which reflects the name of the parent company.
In 1989, the company reverted back to using the old VCI branding. In 1997, the company was renamed to VCI Home Video. Today, the company was named VCI Entertainment.
