Did the DIVX format have worse picture quality than DVD? Is that why the format failed?

Also, I've seen some DVD players from around the time DIVX was launched that could play DIVX discs. One model (branded as RCA, distributed by Thomson Consumer Electronics) can be found on a YouTube video uploaded by the user databits. 69.85.235.224 16:24, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

• The DIVX format's problems went beyond any bad picture quality that might have plagued it.
