Rhino Home Video

From Home Video

History

[edit]

In early 1985, Rhino Records formed its own home video division, Rhino Home Video, in order to distribute home video releases of cult films and television shows. The first release was My Breakfast with Blassie. In 1986, the company entered film production.

Rhino had a few successes during its life, and in 1990, it signed a deal with MCA Distributing Corporation, later known as Uni Distribution, to distribute its home video titles. In 1992, a children's label, Kid Rhino Home Video, was launched. The agreement with Uni expired in 1993, resulting in Rhino signing a new distribution deal with A*Vision Entertainment to market and distribute its home video releases. This deal came shortly after Atlantic Records had acquired a 50% stake in Rhino Records.

In 1994, Rhino launched ACME Video for titles outside of its usual genres. In 1996, distribution shifted to Warner Home Video, and Rhino Home Video signed a deal with Comedy Central. In 1997, the company signed a distribution deal with The Sci-Fi Channel. In 1998, Rhino Entertainment Company was completely sold to Warner Music Group. Also that year, the company teamed up with Warner Home Video to handle the distribution of its South Park home video releases, with Rhino and WHV co-handling marketing, and Warner Home Video handling distribution.

Soon after Rhino was sold to WMG, distribution reverted to Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation. In 1999, the company acquired home video licenses to programs from Sunbow Entertainment and Sid & Marty Krofft Pictures. In 2001, the company acquired home video rights to the Gumby franchise.

In the early 2000s, Rhino Home Video launched banners such as Rhinomation for animated product, and Retrovision for classic TV shows. The label later became part of the Rhino Special Products division of Rhino in the mid-2000s. In the late 2000s, all home video licenses lapsed, resulting in the distribution rights to Hasbro's shows moving to Shout! Factory, while others moved to different labels.
