Rhino Home Video

From Home Video

History[edit]

In early 1985, Rhino Records formed its own home video line, Rhino Home Video, in order to distribute home video releases of cult films and television shows. The first release was My Breakfast with Blassie. In 1986, the company entered film production.

Rhino had a few successes during its life, and in 1990, Rhino signed a home video deal with MCA Distributing Corporation to distribute Rhino's titles on home video. In 1992, the company launched its own home video label, Kid Rhino Home Video. The agreement expired in three years, and in 1993, signed a distribution deal with Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation via A*Vision Entertainment to market and distribute its home video releases. This deal came shortly after Atlantic Records had acquired a 50% stake in Rhino Records.

In 1994, Rhino launched its home video label, ACME Video for titles outside of its usual genres. In 1996, distribution shifted to Warner Home Video, and signed a deal with Comedy Central. In 1997, the company signed a distribution deal with The Sci-Fi Channel. In 1998, Rhino Entertainment Company was completely sold to Warner Music Group. Also that year, the company teamed up with Warner Home Video to handle the distribution of its South Park home video releases, with Rhino and WHV co-handling marketing, and Warner Home Video handled distribution.

Soon after Rhino was sold to WMG, distribution soon reverted back to Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation. In 1999, the company acquired its home video licenses to programs from Sunbow Entertainment and Sid & Marty Krofft Pictures. In 2001, the company acquired home video rights to the Gumby franchise.

In the early 2000s, Rhino Home Video launched its new lines, Rhinomation for animated product, and Retrovision for classic TV shows. The company became Rhino Special Products in the mid-2000s. In the late 2000s, all home video licenses have been lapsed. The distribution rights to Hasbro's shows moved to Shout! Factory, while others moved to different labels.
