Palace Video UK
History
[edit]Palace Video was founded in 1981 by Nik Powell and Stanley Woolley as a vehicle for releases of cult cinema and international art films. It achieved fame in February 1983, when it released a video of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead, which the company successfully fought against the BBFC to keep on video shelves after it was declared a "Video Nasty" by the UK government. When the tape was cleared, it was reissued with a giant sticker that September. Palace was one of the few independent video distributors to survive the pre-cert era, and later delegated the Palace Video name to family-oriented titles, while adopting the Virgin Pictures name for theatrical releases both in the cinema and on video. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1992, and sold its production arm to PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. The video arm ceased operations three years later. Powell and Woolley continue to produce films on their own at present.
