History

[edit]

ITV Studios Home Entertainment was founded in 1983 as Pickwick Video by Pickwick Group PLC. It went on to buy out Longman Group and establish subsidiaries such as Ladybird Video and Screen Legends. In 1992, Pickwick Group PLC was sold to Carlton Communications for £65 million and rebranded as Carlton Visual Entertainment. Carlton chose to retain the video arm in 1998, and sold off its music division to the Point Group. Carlton's inventory expanded to include most of the Rank Organisation's output (aside from Ealing Studios and pre-1945 Alexander Korda films) and the ITC Entertainment lineup (with the exception of Jim Henson productions). In February 2004, the company announced that it was being sold to Granada Ventures; because of this, Granada cut ties with Video Collection International, which itself was merging with BBC Video to form 2Entertain around the same time. The sale was completed in July 2004. In 2006, the company was renamed to ITV DVD; to accommodate Blu-ray releases of its inventory, it was rebranded as ITV Studios Home Entertainment in 2010. The name was retired in January 2013 as part of a rebranding campaign on the part of ITV; all subsequent releases have been carried out under various ITV Studios names. ITV alternated between itself and Network Distributing for releases of shows from its archives until 31 May 2023, when Network went into liquidation.
