'''Golden Book Video''' was originally formed in 1985 by the Western Publishing Company to release videocassettes based on its library of Golden Books. Initially consisting of original animation, it was soon expanded with licensing agreements with DIC Animation City and ABC Video Enterprises in 1986.

In 1986, the label launched an educational sub-division, '''Golden Step Ahead''' for educational material, and in 1987, it launched the '''GoldenVision''' label for general entertainment programming.

In 1991, Western Publishing Company bought out Hi-Tops Video from Heron Communications, and merged it into Golden Book Video, alongside the GoldenVision branch. The name was retired in 1996, when Golden Books acquired Broadway Video's family entertainment division, and became '''Golden Books Family Entertainment'''.
