Dimension Films originated in 1992 as a sub-label of Miramax Films, which was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 1993. After extensive negotiations and much media and industry speculation, on March 30, 2005, over two weeks after the Weinstein brothers formed a new company, simply called The Weinstein Company, Disney and the Weinsteins announced that they would not renew their contractual relationship when their then-existing agreement expired on September 30, 2005. The primary source of dispute was over distribution of Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore. As a result, the Weinstein brothers took the Dimension Films label with them.
On March 19, 2018, The Weinstein Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein. As a result, on July 16, 2018, Lantern Capital Partners acquired the company and renamed it to Lantern Entertainment, and Weinstein was charged for sexual assault, ultimately being convicted in two separate trials. As of 2025, he remains in prison.
