This label’s predecessor name, Buena Vista Home Video, originated in 1983 as a stand-alone video label of Walt Disney Telecommunications and Non-Theatrical Company that distributed releases either licensed from, or produced in partnership with, non-Disney companies. The label became an incorporate of WDTNT on March 31, 1988, coinciding with the moratorium of the limited availability Classics video releases of Sleeping Beauty (released October 14, 1986) and Lady and the Tramp (released October 6, 1987) and the popular demand Classics video re-issue of Robin Hood, an October 6, 1987 re-issue of the previous release from October 14, 1986.
From the label's establishment in 1983 to 1997 when the label was renamed to its current name, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Inc. (formerly Buena Vista Distribution Co., Inc.) was credited as the copyright holder.
