- January 7: Lionsgate secures a deal with American Greetings to acquire home entertainment rights to Care Bears and Sushi Pack.
- February 9: Disney via Touchstone Pictures secured a deal with DreamWorks Pictures. As a result, Disney took over distribution for most future live-action DreamWorks films, including home video.
- April 1: Viz Media secures a distribution deal with Warner Home Video.
- May 18: Mill Creek Entertainment secured a deal with Stephen J. Cannell Productions to distribute its catalog on home video.
- June: Paramount Home Entertainment planned to consider a merger with either 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment or Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. If the merger happened, either Sony or Fox would handle distribution, while Paramount would retain its own marketing and sales.
- July 20: Mill Creek Entertainment had acquired the assets of the former BCI Eclipse.
- August 10: The Jim Henson Company had secured a deal with Lionsgate to distribute titles on home video.
- September: Genius Products was sold to Vivendi Entertainment.
- September 1: ADV Films became Section23 Films.
- October:
- Warner Home Video picks up distribution rights to Sesame Street.
- Technicolor Home Entertainment Services extends its deal with Paramount Home Entertainment, which resulted in the latter cancelling its above mentioned previously planned consolidation.
- November 17: CBS Films had secured a deal with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions for home video titles and international distribution.
- December:
- After 12 years with Warner Home Video, Vivendi Entertainment picks up distribution rights to National Geographic's titles.
- Kino International merged with Lorber HT Digital to form Kino Lorber.
- December 17: The Blu-ray Disc Association announced the specifications for the new Blu-ray 3D.
- December 21: Shout! Factory secures a deal with New Horizons to market and distribute titles.
- December 31: The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment. As a result, Walt Disney Studio Home Entertainment begins distributing Marvel's titles on home video.
