- February 29: Paramount announced the return to releasing HD titles on Blu-ray Disc after the releases of "Into the Wild" and "Things We Lost in the Fire."
- March 18: Toshiba announced the discontinuation of the HD DVD format.
- March 24: HIT Entertainment signed a new home video deal with Lionsgate Home Entertainment after its deal with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment expired.
- June 11: FremantleMedia Enterprises secured a home entertainment distribution deal with Acorn Media Group to release its British mystery and drama titles on home video.
- June 24: PeaceArch Home Entertainment and ContentFilm merged its DVD business.
- August 4: ABC Studios secured a distribution deal with Lionsgate Home Entertainment for releases of older TV show titles.
- October 1: Digiview Entertainment sued Warner Home Video over the use of DVD patents. As a result, Digiview Entertainment soon goes out of business.
- October 15: Playboy Enterprises announced that they will stop offering mass market DVDs.
- October 28: The last standalone JVC VHS-only player was produced.
- October 31: The last major United States supplier of pre-recorded VHS tapes, Distribution Video Audio Inc. of Palm Harbor, Florida, shipped its final truckload to stores in America.
- Watching television series on DVD became popular in Sweden.
