Events
- January: HIT Entertainment shut down its home video business, and signed a deal with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
- January 1: Viacom is split into CBS Corporation and the new Viacom.
- January 12: Liberation Entertainment had secured a deal with Genius Products to distribute its titles on DVD.
- January 16: BCI secures a deal with Entertainment Rights to market and distribute the Filmation catalog on DVD.
- February: DreamWorks was sold to Paramount Pictures. As a result, home video distribution of DreamWorks was transferred to Paramount Home Entertainment.
- March 21: Ventura Distribution was sold to First Look Studios for $20 million.
- March 31: The HD DVD format was launched by Toshiba.
- April: Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products spun off the digital and interactive content activities of its Nickelodeon Entertainment Products segment to form a separate segment, Nickelodeon Digital Media, with former Nickelodeon Entertainment Products senior vice president Steve Youngwood promoted to vice president and general manager of the new segment.
- April 12: Mattel and Universal Studios Home Entertainment secured a distribution deal to distribute future Barbie DVDs.
- April 15: Warner Bros. started legal action against Anchor Bay Entertainment for unauthorized DVD releases of The Man from U.N.C.L.E..
- April 23: Tartan Films had secured a deal with Genius Products to distribute its titles on DVD.
- April 27: Universal Music & Video Distribution was renamed to Universal Music Group Distribution.
- May 16: IDT Entertainment was sold to Liberty Media for $186 million.
- May 31: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment took over home video distribution of the MGM library from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Sony would continue to distribute MGM catalog titles for a couple more months, even including a few of them (The Terminator, The Last Waltz, and Species) in its initial Blu-ray releases.
- June 13: Hart Sharp Video signed a distribution deal with Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation.
- June 20: The Blu-ray format was launched by Sony. This and the above mentioned HD-DVD sparked a format war where Blu-ray quickly won.
- July 10: ESPN secures a deal with Genius Entertainment to market titles under ESPN Home Entertainment.
- August 30: IDT's sale of its entertainment division to Liberty Media has been completed and the company became Starz Media.
- October 3: Discovery Networks secured a deal with Image Entertainment to distribute and market DVD releases.
- October 17: WWE Home Video had secured a distribution deal with Genius Products.
- November 15: The Weinstein Company had signed an exclusive rental deal with Blockbuster to market its home video titles.
- December 4: The newly-formed City Lights Home Entertainment signed a distribution deal with Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation.
- December 11: RHI Entertainment secured a deal with The Weinstein Company and Genius Entertainment to market home video releases.
- Most companies stopped releasing anything on VHS, although Disney, PBS and National Geographic made a few more VHS tapes until 2007 (2008 in the case of National Geographic). Paramount and DreamWorks also continued making VHS tapes until 2008, albeit only as demo tapes.
- Target and Walmart stopped selling VHS tapes in the US and Canada after the Christmas and holiday season.
- The ADS Group acquired Digital Excellence and Precision Powerhouse.
