• April 26: Viacom completes its purchase of CBS. As a result, CBS's home video division terminates its distribution deal with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and begins distributing most of its titles through Paramount Home Entertainment.
• May 12: Simitar Entertainment closed its doors after filing bankruptcy.
• June: Lions Gate Entertainment announces its acquisition of Trimark Holdings.
• June 28: The BBC transferred its American home video distribution from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment to Warner Home Video.
• October: Lions Gate Entertainment's acquisition of Trimark Holdings was completed.
• October 3: The last major film on Laserdisc, Bringing Out the Dead was released.
