- March: Warner Home Video terminated its distribution contract with MGM/UA Home Video. In return, MGM/UA surrendered the video rights to the pre-1986 MGM library outright to Warner Home Video.
- March 13: Rhino Home Video secured a deal with Sid & Marty Krofft Pictures to market its titles on home video.
- April: Seagram sells PolyGram Video to Barry Diller's USA Networks, and it was renamed to USA Home Entertainment.
- May 5: NBC Enterprises began partnering with Trimark Home Video to handle marketing and distribution of the NBC Home Video label to the mass market.
- June: By this time, Technicolor Video Services has fully acquired Central de Video.
- June 16: The DIVX format was discontinued by Circuit City.
- October:
- The Bertelsmann Music Group secured a deal with Artisan Entertainment to license The Firm to fulfill its contract.
- Artisan Home Entertainment secured a deal with Discovery Networks to distribute its content for a four-year period.
- November:
- Paramount Home Video was renamed to Paramount Home Entertainment.
- Sony Wonder took over marketing of the Random House Home Video label from parent Random House.
- November 9: CIC Video was folded into Paramount Home Entertainment.
