  • Image Entertainment began producing titles on VHS.
  • Hallmark Home Entertainment had acquired Cabin Fever Entertainment.
  • 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment discontinued the FoxVideo name.
• April:
  • LIVE Entertainment became Artisan Entertainment.
  • Rhino Home Video and Warner Home Video collaborated on the home video release of South Park, with both WHV and Rhino handling marketing together.
  • York Home Video and Maverick Entertainment teamed up to jointly acquire and release films.
• May:
  • Warner Music Group acquired Rhino Entertainment Company, although its home video contract with Warner Home Video did not expire for several years.
  • WRS Motion Picture and Video Laboratory sued Plaza Entertainment over some units of The Giant of Thunder Mountain.
• May 9: Palm Pictures, Chris Blackwell's new company, had secured a distribution deal with Rykodisc.
• May 16: The Jim Henson Company had secured a deal with Columbia TriStar Home Video to release its titles.
• June 8: The DIVX format was launched.
• August 11: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, after a deal with Time Warner Cable, to carry the new Fox Family, became one of the last majors to enter the DVD market.
• August: Artisan Entertainment secured a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment to distribute Artisan's titles, while Artisan continued to handle the marketing and sales.
• September: Artisan secured a deal with Republic Pictures.
