• Warren Miller Entertainment leaves Orion Home Video for a distribution deal with Buena Vista Home Video.
• January: Warner Home Video picks up the National Geographic Video brand from Columbia TriStar Home Video for mass market retailers.
• January 24: The purchase of New World Communications by News Corporation has just been completed. As a result, most future New World titles will be released by Fox.
• March:
  • Rhino Home Video signed a distribution agreement with the Sci-Fi Channel.
  • Fox Lorber ends its agreement with Metromedia Entertainment Group, which set up its own distribution.
  • Vidmark Entertainment changed its name to Trimark Home Video, starting with the release of Meet Wally Sparks.
• March 24: DVD was launched to customer retail stores, with Warner Home Video as its first clients.
• April:
  • Live Entertainment was sold to private capital firm Bain Capital.
  • Simitar Entertainment became the first independent distributor to offer DVD releases.
• April 5: NBC News had secured a home video deal with New Video.
