Capital Cities/ABC Video Publishing was merged into Buena Vista Home Video, following ABC's 1996 purchase by Disney.
Warren Miller Entertainment leaves Orion Home Video for a distribution deal with Buena Vista Home Video.
January: Warner Home Video picks up the National Geographic Video brand from Columbia TriStar Home Video for mass market retailers.
January 24: The purchase of New World Communications by News Corporation has just been completed. As a result, most future New World titles will be released by Fox.
March:
- Rhino Home Video signed a distribution agreement with the Sci-Fi Channel.
- Fox Lorber ends its agreement with Metromedia Entertainment Group and set up its own distribution.
- Vidmark Entertainment changed its name to Trimark Home Video, starting with the release of Meet Wally Sparks.
March 24: DVD was launched to customer retail stores, with Warner Home Video as its first clients.
April:
- Live Entertainment was sold to private capital firm Bain Capital.
- Simitar Entertainment became the first independent distributor to offer DVD releases.
April 5: NBC News had secured a home video deal with New Video.
April 26: MTM Enterprises had secured a home video deal with New Video.
June 11: News Corporation announced plans to purchase International Family Entertainment. As a result, the MTM home video agreement with New Video quickly expired and shifted to Fox.
July: Sony Music Entertainment's Sony Wonder division picked up the Kidsongs line from WarnerVision Entertainment's KidVision division.
September: Lyrick Studios acquired the mass market distribution rights of VeggieTales for wide release.
November: Chris Blackwell formed Islandlife to take the Manga Entertainment label from PolyGram.
December:
- Live Entertainment secured a distribution deal with Hallmark Home Entertainment.
- Coliseum Video shut down operations. As a result, the WWF took over distribution of its titles.
