• January:
  • Warner Communications' acquisition of Lorimar-Telepictures has been completed. As a result, Lorimar Home Video was completely folded into Warner Home Video.
• May:
  • Trylon Video was formed with Orion Home Video distributing its titles.
  • The Handleman Company forms a joint venture with GoodTimes Home Video in Canada, called HGV Video Productions.
• June: Elektra Entertainment secured a deal with MTV Networks for the home video rights to Nickelodeon titles.
• July:
  • M.C.E.G. acquired Virgin Vision and the US operations merged with Forum Home Video to form M.C.E.G. Virgin Home Entertainment.
  • Bertelsmann Music Group introduces the BMG Video label to the United States.
• August: Buena Vista Home Video announced that it was reducing the MSRP of its Walt Disney Cartoon Classics, Disney's Sing-Along Songs, Walt Disney Mini-Classics and DuckTales video lines, as well as its then-upcoming Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh lines, to $12.99 from $14.95.
• August 15: RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video commences distribution of a selection of GoodTimes Home Video product; the arrangement will last through October 1, 1990.
• September:
  • Sony Corporation announces that it will acquire Columbia Pictures Entertainment.
  • EMI formed its own home video arm, EMI Video.
• September 28: Coinciding with the release of Bambi on home video, the price reduction for Buena Vista Home Video's six video lines became effective.
• November:
  • Sony Corporation's acquisition of Columbia Pictures Entertainment was completed.
  • MPI Home Video sold all rights to the Gorgon Video name to executive Nasser Zager, amidst the controversy surrounding Faces of Death.
• December:
  • Trans World Entertainment signs a distribution deal with RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video.
  • Prism Entertainment signs a distribution deal with Paramount Home Video.
  • Kodak sells its video program division to Wood Knapp Video.
