- Sony Video Software launched its first videocassettes.
- Summer: MCA Videocassette, Inc. and MCA Videodisc are merged into a single entity, MCA Home Video.
- June: Vestron Video secured a deal with Penthouse to launch its Penthouse Video line.
- August: Vestron Video formed its own children's arm, Children's Video Library.
- December: Heron Communications had acquired majority ownership in Media Home Entertainment.
