Worldvision Home Video

Worldvision Home Video was the home video distribution division of television syndicator Worldvision Enterprises (not to be confused with the charitable organization World Vision International).

History

edit

Worldvision Home Video was originally formed in late 1981 to release titles on home video, from the libraries of Hanna-Barbera, Ruby-Spears and QM Productions, as well as acquired content. Albert Hartigan was hired as executive vice president, with Martin Weinstein as sales manager.

In 1986, it secured a sub-licensing deal with GoodTimes Home Video to release titles for budget-priced ranges, most notably from the Hanna-Barbera library. As part of the deal, most of Hanna-Barbera's titles were released by GoodTimes subsidiary Kids Klassics.

In 1987, Worldvision's parent company Taft Broadcasting, became Great American Broadcasting. A year later, Great American sold off Worldvision Enterprises, including its home video unit, to Spelling Entertainment. As a result, Hanna-Barbera formed its own home video division, Hanna-Barbera Home Video. Early titles on the Hanna-Barbera Home Video label released until 1989 were marketed by Worldvision Home Video. Despite this, Worldvision Enterprises kept the syndication rights to the H-B library for a few years. In late 1991, Hanna-Barbera was sold to Turner Broadcasting System, cutting all ties with Worldvision.

In 1993, Spelling Entertainment bought out Republic Pictures, and the following year, Worldvision Home Video merged into Republic Pictures Home Video.
