The VCRs they made after 1993 are notorious for problems/defects such as a dirty mode encoder switch (which can cause the machine to eat tapes, turn off on its own, eject the tape on its own, etc.).

On most VCRs, let alone post-'93 Funais, the mode encoder was normally located underneath the VCR mechanism. The mode encoder is supposed to tell the machine what mode it is in, whether it be play, stop, rewind, or fast-forward.
