Republic Pictures Home Entertainment

From Home Video

History[edit]

In 1983, National Telefilm Associates, whose original contract with The Nostalgia Merchant had expired at the time, had set up its own home video division, NTA Home Entertainment, to issue its library on videocassette. In 1984, it launched a division, Spotlite Video, which was restricted to issuing public domain material.

By the end of the year, NTA had bought out logos, copyrights, and trademarks of Republic Pictures Corporation, renaming itself as said company in its second incarnation, and as a result, the home video division was renamed to Republic Pictures Home Video. In 1985, they launched a religious sub-label, Inspiration Video, which served the same function as Spotlite, with most of the material licensed from World Wide Pictures. Also that year, the company briefly held distribution of Vidmark Entertainment's titles.

In early 1986, the Spotlite and Inspiration labels began to be phased out in favor of using the Republic Pictures Home Video name. It continued as a supplier of public domain material, and official Republic productions, alongside original material.

In the early 1990s, the company secured a deal with Lumiere Pictures to market and distribute titles on videocassette, as well as a deal with Hallmark to market and distribute titles on videocassette. Hallmark ended its deal with Republic soon afterwards and began marketing its own library on videocassette. In 1993, Republic Pictures formed a new umbrella company, Republic Pictures Home Entertainment, with Republic Pictures Home Video becoming a division of this company. The following year, Worldvision Home Video was folded into RPHV.

In 1998, the RPHV name was phased out, and RPHE secured a distribution deal with Artisan Home Entertainment, in which the latter would market and distribute titles from the former.
